Permits and licences
Under the Safety Codes Act, the City of Edmonton requires a gas permit to install, alter or relocate gas equipment such as a furnace, and contractors must be licensed with the City. For residential renovation work the permit is $120 plus a $4.80 safety code fee through December 31, 2026. Gasfitting is a compulsory trade in Alberta, so the person connecting the gas must be a certified gasfitter or registered apprentice.

If you smell gas
Don't troubleshoot. ATCO's advice: leave the area right away, go to a neighbour's, and call ATCO, 911 or the fire department. Don't use your phone or turn light switches on or off inside.

Heat pumps and the Clean Energy Improvement Program
Edmonton's Clean Energy Improvement Program finances $3,000 to $50,000 of upgrades at a fixed 6.00% through your property tax bill. A high-efficiency gas furnace isn't eligible on its own, only together with a heat pump. The program is nearing capacity, and new applications go to a waitlist.
How many heating companies serve Edmonton?
Google Maps lists more than 100, with a median rating of 4.9 stars on 122 reviews. With that many highly rated options, ratings alone don't separate them. We match you with one that is established, well reviewed and serves your part of the city.
